It’s to be admired that nearly 40 years on, an entire room of people were singing the entirety of the late 70’s classic, all thanks to one young man from California. There was little need for introduction on ‘ Every 1’s A Winner’, mind – the revved up Hot Chocolate cover sending the crowd ballistic. I don’t know whether it’s my new plugs, but it was that loud you couldn’t hear a fucking word outside of the vocals. From joyous big band to raucous beginnings, the gnarliest of extended intro’s bled into crowd favourite ‘ Finger’, giving off the feelingof hurtling down a desert highway at speed.Ī huge 1-2-3 combo came from 2016’s ‘Emotional Mugger’, with the deafening stomp of ‘ Squealer’ colliding head-on with the distorted ’ Breakfast Eggs’ and ‘ Candy Sam’, the latter seeing the pit open up as Kelly and Segall wigged-out.

It’s on ‘ Fanny Dog’ where guitarist Emmett Kelly (MVP of the evening) showed off his chops, letting rip but looking cucumber cool in the process. With such a big band feel, it came alive in Manchester. ‘ Fanny Dog’ comes out early, sounding particularly joyful, with the most heavenly of backing woos from the rest of the band. His latest opus ‘ Freedom’s Goblin’ has hardly left our record player since its release earlier this year. It’s hard not to talk in hyperbole when recounting the events of the evening, as everything seemed to disappear into the background as soon as Ty arrived. Boy, how sweet it would end up being.Īrriving on stage around 15 minutes ahead of schedule, there was no buggering about as they launched into the blood-boiling, fuzzed up opener ‘ Wave Goodbye’ from 2012’s ‘ Slaughterhouse’. As a recent Ty disciple, this was like a glimpse at the cherry on top of a sundae as it was brought over to your table. Sure enough, just over an hour before walking on stage, Ty and his band had performed a mini-session for Riley, knocking out the likes of ‘ Every 1’s A Winner’ and ‘ Despoiler Of Cadaver’ to people listening across the globe. I’m a regular listener of his BBC Radio 6 Music show, but with Ty Segall and his Freedom Band headlining, chances are the majority of the audience would be introducing themselves to him at some point (if they hadn’t already…)
